Having a unique name comes with a lot of challenges. Most of the time when I meet people who only know my name are often surprised when I show up. My name doesn't sound like a name that a "white" girl would have, and I've been asked if it's a nickname. I wasn't born in September, funnily enough none of my family have a birthday in September, and I honestly get tired of being questioned about the month. I was named Sapphire because of where I was born. I was born in Great Falls, Montana and near that city there is apparently a Sapphire mine, and my mom thought Sapphire would be a pretty name. It is, not going to lie, however add in my middle name and it sounds ridiculous. Sapphire Rayne, like who names their kid that. (I'm not mad).
Growing up with the name Sapphire Rayne has been a life of annoyance for all the questions I get about it, and add in that I move a lot makes it worse. Additionally, the baggage that comes with the name is that everyone assumes that my favorite color is blue. Of course everyone thinks blue would be my favorite color, and I have been gifted blue things my entire life. I honestly don't like the color blue, like at all. My favorite color is a rusty pink color, and is a color I seek out.
I do, however, use blue when marketing my work, it's expected. I only use my first and middle name, so I have to have color association with my marketing. I know that blue is calming and that using it in my brand gives a calm atmosphere, which is what I strive for with clients. I will continue to market with colors associated with my name, and will continue to answer any and all questions about my name.
